Nothing says winter in Wisconsin like ice skating (inside or outside)! Find outdoor and indoor ice-skating rinks at Waukesha County parks and other local parks located throughout Lake Country. Be sure to check the status before attending as warm weather can cause the rinks to close.
In this guide you will find:
– Outdoor Rink Locations
– Indoor Rink locations
***Disclaimer – This information can change as ice skating is weather-dependent, and weather in Wisconsin is unpredictable. Caution must be used at rinks that are on the water (not land rinks) to ensure ice is thick enough to skate on. Also, do not skate on closed land rinks, as you can damage the liner, stopping the fun for everyone. Skate at your own risk. ***

Howard G. Mullett Ice Center

Start Winter Break with a festive Skate with Santa event on December 20th, 2025 from 1 to 3 PM. Families are invited to enjoy a joyful afternoon on the ice with a special appearance by Santa, creating memorable moments for skaters of all ages. During Winter Break, guests can also take advantage of extended public skating hours available daily, making it easy to fit skating into your holiday plans. Looking ahead to the New Year, Winter Learn to Skate classes begin on January 14th. These classes are a great gift option and a fun way to build confidence and skills on the ice. Plan your visit and enjoy skating all season long!
9 Outdoor Ice Rinks
*Most of the outdoor rinks require families to bring their own skates. There is not usually an attendant available at the rinks in Lake Country/Waukesha or the ability to rent skates. If you are looking for where to sharpen your ice skates locally, try one of these places:
- The Howard G. Mullett Ice Center in Hartland on the Arrowhead campus
- Nagawicka Ice Arena in Delafield
- Hockey Haven in Brookfield
OUR LOCAL OUTDOOR ICE RINKS
1. SK_8 SLAB ICE RINK at Nixon Park in Hartland
There is a warming house and ice rink at Nixon Park again this year. (Many years ago, there was an ice rink in the parking lot.) This ice rink is brought to you by the Village of Hartland and many generous sponsors. Lake Country Family Fun was one of the original sponsors.
Hours are 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, 7 days a week. Basically, if the lights are on, the rink is open!
There is a port o pottie on site (by the parking lot) for public use, but we recommend going at home prior as you’ll have all those layers on.
Rentals are not available. The season will be based on weather. Follow the Hartland Recreation Department on Facebook to stay up to date on whether the rink is open or not. Check the status on the Village Recreational Department’s Facebook page. Bonus, they have music playing and lights!!
What we love is it is “open skate” aka, no hockey playing on this rink, just ice skating in like a winter leisure hobby!
OPEN as of 1/15/2026.
2. Delafield Fish Hatchery/Sports Complex
Delafield Fish Hatchery/Sports Complex
The ice skating rink is 52 feet x 100 feet and is maintained by the City of Delafield. There are two hockey goals available. It is free to use and has a portable restroom and benches. There is no warming house. Users must bring their skates and are encouraged to wear helmets and other protective equipment such as elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards.
Because hockey is available on this rink, it is easily overtaken by players and not our favorite to use for an “open skate” experience.
BUT it is in close proximity to downtown, restaurants, and more!
3. Fowler Lake Ice Rink
Fowler Lake in Oconomowoc
A 10-acre community park located on the eastern shore of Fowler Lake central Oconomowoc: 500 Oakwood Ave., Oconomowoc. You can enter the rink from the boat launch.
The City of Oconomowoc Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department maintains an ice skating rink on Fowler Lake when ice thickness in the rink area is 7 inches or more. Please remember, keep skates on the ice only. Stay off the boardwalk to avoid damaging it. Enjoy the ice!
There are no lights, so skate while it’s daytime.
Stay tuned for 2025 opening dates, which are weather permitting. *Not maintaining a rink on Lac La Belle for the foreseeable future.
OPEN in December 2025/January 2026 when the barricades are up on the ice. Use your best judgement based on weather as it’s been a mild winter. Do not go out on the ice if you don’t know how thick it is.
4. and 5. LOWELL PARK and BUCHNER PARK in Waukesha

OPEN as of 12/19/2025.
6 Indoor Ice Rinks
Sometimes winter weather doesn’t cooperate to ice skate outside. It can be too warm or too cold or the worst – rainy! Luckily, there are many indoor ice skating rinks in the Lake Country and Waukesha County area for your family to enjoy!
Because indoor ice skating rinks usually share time with hockey teams and clubs, it is important to find their OPEN SKATE times or PUBLIC SKATE times. During public skate, you can skate the perimeter of the rink, and hockey is not allowed.
The Mullett Ice Center in Hartland has public skate times weekly and more often over break. Tap the link below for their current public skating times.
AND a bonus to indoor skating rinks, is you can likely throw a party or birthday party there in their party rooms. Have your friends and family skate and then have a room to the side to gather, hang out, open presents, or have a snack.
