Sheep Shearing Weekend at Old World Wisconsin

Shearing is the process of removing excess wool from sheep and other animals. Some breeds of sheep have hair that sheds itself, however, the Merinos and Cotswold sheep were bred for their ability to grow long, wooly coats. Historical methods use large scissor-like blades and is known as hand-shearing. In modern times, electric devices are typically used to ensure smooth, easy maneuving over the wrinkled skin. Removing excess wool is very important in maintaining temperature and moisture control, reducing weight, and is a great way to check on the animal’s health. As it gets warmer outside, you put your winter coat away and don something a bit more comfortable in the sun, just like the sheep do before the summer. Thankfully, this process doesn’t hurt the sheep and allows for staff to utilize the wool itself for yarn, spinning, and other projects.

Join in at Old World Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday to see how shearing has been done over the years.

PS. We’ve (Erin) been to this in the past, and the kids loved watching and learning about the process.
