Mukwonago in the Civil War: 5th Wisconsin Infantry
The Civil War’s 5th Wisconsin Infantry has a significant Mukwonago area connection – over 2 dozen soldiers from Mukwonago and nearby towns served in it, almost half of those in Company F.
Though the Army of the Potomac – which included 3 Wisconsin infantry regiments (2nd, 6th, 7th) – was the main fighting force in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War, the 5th Wisconsin infantry regiment also earned the reputation as a hard-fighting unit. Learn about the brave exploits of the 5th Infantry in a 2-part presentation: Part 1 – Sunday July 13; Part 2 – Sunday July 27.
Battles in which the 5th Wisconsin Infantry played an important and pivotal role:
Battle of Williamsburg
Battle of 2nd Fredericksburg (Chancellorsville)
2nd Battle of Rappahannock Station
Battle of the Wilderness
Battle of Spotsylvania Court House
Battle of Cold Harbor
The Breakthrough at Petersburg
Battle of Sailor’s Creek
