Shelf Indulgence Book Club at the Hartland Public Library

If you enjoy reading a diverse mix of fiction and nonfiction, then this book club is for you! This book club reads one book each month, and meets on the third Thursday at 11 am or the fourth Tuesday at 6 pm (pick one meeting) to discuss it. The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

In 1972, an excavation operation for a new housing complex discovers a skeleton in the bottom of a well. The novel then goes back to 1920s and 1930s Pottstown, Pennsylvania, exploring the lives of the residents of the Chicken Hill neighborhood, which is inhabited mainly by Jewish and Black residents.

The Sentence by Louise Erdrich

Tookie, an Indigenous woman in Minneapolis, is being haunted by Flora, a former customer at the bookstore where Tookie works. The bookstore is a fictionalized version of Birchbark Books, which is the real bookstore that Louise Erdrich owns!

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon

In this novel, inspired by the diary of an 18th-century midwife in Maine, Martha Ballard is called to examine a body discovered in the frozen river. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, she is forced to investigate the murder on her own.
