Please see this letter from OASD regarding the 2025 Oconomowoc Homecoming Parade:
The Oconomowoc Police Department is entrusted with ensuring public safety at all of our city’s parades, which are organized and managed by a variety of community partners. Among them, our Homecoming Parade is hosted each fall by Oconomowoc High School and the Oconomowoc Area School District. This
parade is one of the most beloved and well-attended events of the year. Generations of families, students, and alumni have cherished this tradition, and we recognize how much it means to our community. The Homecoming Parade is truly unlike any other parade in Oconomowoc. It includes the largest number of student participants, ranging from elementary through high school, and it draws a large crowd that often includes a higher number of unsupervised children compared to other events. As such, the parade poses unique safety challenges, most notably with the distribution of candy and other items to attendees. When not distributed in a safe and controlled manner, this experience can result in children running into the street, potentially in front of moving vehicles.
Over the past several months, members of the school district have met with City of Oconomowoc and Oconomowoc Police Department representatives to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience at this year’s Homecoming parade. To that end, we are making some important adjustments to our parade protocols:
• Float Captains: Each float will have a designated captain responsible for the safety of those on and
around their float.
• Designated Candy Distributors: Only a limited number of participants, all at least 12 years old, will be
allowed to hand out candy or other items.
• Curb-Side Distribution: Candy will be handed out at the curb, not thrown from floats or into the
street.
• Parade Supervisors: We will have supervisors along the route to help keep attendees out of the
street and ensure all participants follow the rules. Our goal is to keep this wonderful tradition alive and safe for our entire community. Your support of these efforts is crucial. As parade participants, please help us by ensuring that:
• Your children are supervised at all times.
• Adults remain curbside with children throughout the parade.
• Adults and children remain aware of their surroundings.
Your partnership is vital in helping us keep everyone safe and ensuring that candy distribution remains part of the Homecoming parade tradition.Thank you for your cooperation!
Sincerely,
James P. Pfister, Chief of Police,
Michael Sereno, OASD Superintendent
Jason Curtis, OHS Principal
